We find ways to leverage the resources that a project and team have available to them - with the aim of expanding project opportunity, establishing new partnerships, local capacity building opportunities, or unique connections to the landscape and neighbourhood.
This includes listening and facilitating to make the process more meaningful to our clients and accountable to project stakeholders and to create a direct lineage between MOTIV and reality. This leads to more considered solutions and ultimately to building trusting relationships that are a key part of our process and a project’s success.
We work directly with you, encouraging client and community authorship and active participation in the design , always seeking to make our process more visible, more public, and more tangible.
It is only by bringing all project parameters and viewpoints to the table, that a process of distillation can occur. This resonates through all aspects of a project, from space planning, through systems selection and integration to material choices. Less is more, but only if you have the right components harmoniously integrated when the project is complete.
We work to bring the material qualities of our work forward in the process so that this becomes an active part of the design discussion. This is often in the exploration of detail – how materials and systems come together and what their textural qualities might be.
Our design responses are rooted in the environment – the land, water and the sky. We are intrigued by the challenges of creating linkages between urban and rural, in the value of soil in an urban future and in the challenge of reintroducing agriculture to the urban context.
We work with our clients to explore new ways to enrich our communities and enliven our local economies through design and we know there is significant potential for our designs to make change for future generations. We seek out passive design elements, advocate for Net Zero on our projects when renewable energy sources are viable for a site, and are mindful of the embodied energy of new materials and that contained within our existing buildings. At MOTIV we cast a critical eye towards our own footprint, the way that we live and the way that we work – coming full circle to how we plug-in to the larger community in a meaningful way.
