Academic Enrichment Centre

Edmonton, AB

Construction complete 2019

The King’s University in Edmonton invested in an Academic Learning Centre to provide students with a variety of academic support needs, including assistance in academic preparedness (e.g. essay writing, subject tutoring, accommodation support, and testing). The mandate for MOTIV included developing a campus space that fosters well-being, learning, community engagement, and sustainability.

The design co-located new enrichment services in the library to foster collaboration between the programs. The team reimagined the role of the traditional library and bookstore in considering the changing dynamic of learning, physical and digital information, and the human exchange necessary to reinforce a healthy community.

The centre introduces wood to the space defining the core circulation and a series of meeting, testing, and collaboration spaces. A new corridor increases the openness and access to the library, providing a much-needed front door for the library to the rest of campus.

The space is envisioned as an environment that is open, welcoming, universally accessible, and non-discriminatory. The space is flexible and expandable to allow for future increase in the provision of student services.
