Clayoquot Biosphere Centre

Tofino, BC

Concept design complete 2020

Drawing upon the UNESCO themes of education, science, and culture, the Clayoquot Biosphere Centre will be a place of sharing and learning for the residents of Tofino, Ucluelet, and five Nuu-chah-nulth communities; Hesquiaht, Ahousaht, Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations, Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ, and the Toquaht Nation.

The design process has been crafted to engage with the stakeholders of the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust and the larger region. Formally, the design aims to provide a modern mixed-used structure that references traditional Nuu-chah-nulth principles of living, while grounding the building in the scale and character of the existing neighbourhood. The new structure will include office and archival space, a community education room, a co-working space, and modest residential units for staff and visiting researchers.

The compact site is prominently located on the curve of Campbell Road and provides a large change in grade across its depth. The design proposal tucks the building into the grade, providing parking below the structure and creating a pedestrian- oriented entry adjacent to the m ulti-use p athway that connects Tofino to Ucluelet. Covered decks at the upper level extend activity from the community space and the teaching kitchen to the exterior and offer views out towards the water and adjacent landscapes.
