The Granary includes a boutique microbrewery and restaurant featuring local farm products and brews crafted on site surrounded by 36 ground-oriented townhomes. Central to the Southlands Market District, this 38,000 square foot site is directly across from the Red Barn Community building and between the Market Commons to the west and the Discovery Centre to the east.
The challenge of this project was to create a bold street façade that continues to reinforce Market Avenue along its south edge, while providing an animated pedestrian realm and patio as a foil to the ebb and flow of community activity that surrounds the Red Barn. Two strong gable forms anchor the corners of the site with a large connecting patio and entrance off of Market Avenue.
The townhomes are organized around a central landscaped courtyard. Porch fronts frame the street edge with less formal patios within the courtyard. Gable house forms reference agricultural typologies while presenting modern materials and detailing. Armatures for supporting hops and for drying herbs and other goods grown on site are an integrated component of the buildings and landscape.
