KPU Sustainable Agriculture Barn

Richmond, BC

Concept design complete 2022

MOTIV has completed a farm master plan as well as a space program and concept design for a barn structure to support the Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s four year Bachelor of Applied Science in Sustainable Agriculture program on the Garden City Lands in Richmond.

KPU currently leases 20 acres of the site for a teaching and research farm of small-scale, intensive, high-value, and cost-effective crop production with minimal infrastructure and capital investment. While directly supporting the academic program, the farm aspires to demonstrate that small-scale agriculture within the urban fabric is not only viable, but critical for sustainable food systems.

Master planning explored both the long term expansion and diversification of the farm, as well as the location of support structures and vehicular and pedestrian pathways.

The barn design provides the space needed to support the ongoing activity of their sustainable agriculture program, while complimenting the existing high tunnels and the greenhouse dome structures.

The siting of the barn is located at the terminus of Lansdowne Road - a flagship structure for KPU and the City of Richmond - as well as a gathering and learning space that reinforces the existing Legacy Landscape Plan for the complete Garden City Lands.
