STRIKE for Climate

September 30, 2019 was a memorable day in Vancouver. Over 100,000 people showed up to strike for the climate. A sea of people filled Cambie Street. MOTIV was there, along with many other design professionals.

News articles circulated that same week reminded us that very little of what we think we recycle actually ends up in a positive recycle loop - often dumped or burned or offloaded to international markets where it loses its trail of accountability, rather than being processed into formats that can be utilized for other products.

This is messed up right?

So what are we going to do about it? It is tough to get past the feeling of helplessness - as a design firm and as individuals - when faced with the scale of change that is required.

MOTIV has many interests that are finely intertwined with the larger issues of sustainability and climate change, including food security, regenerative agriculture, and building resilience within communities. This gives us an avenue, beyond avoiding plastics and biking to work, to engage in a collective voice on these topics and to advocate for change.

We intend to ramp this up over the long term, but also make this part of our immediate federal election agenda. Which candidates are giving climate action the attention it requires within their policy? Who has the chops to make the scale of change required to turn the ship around?

And here at the studio, it is time to set some definitive intention. The criteria of where we will engage, how, and what change we want to invest in - will be overlain on the projects that we take on. Snap it into focus.
