Mary's Barn

We recently toured this little gem at the Sharing Farm in Terra Nova Park in Richmond. The farm is an important and successful precedent for growing food successfully in an urban context but also for building community through an extensive volunteer program and providing public education on food and farming.

The barn is named after Mary Gazetas - the inspiration behind and a founding member of The Richmond Fruit Tree Sharing Project, the original name of The Sharing Farm. Having originally secured a small plot of City of Richmond land to grow vegetables for the Food Bank, Gazetas was invited to bring her team to Terra Nova Park when it was created to establish The Sharing Farm.

The Sharing Farm has donated thousands of pounds of fresh organic vegetables for low-income families in Richmond, and also sells produce at the Richmond Farmers’ Market and offers a summer CSA program.

Mary’s Barn is the hub for the Sharing Farm programs and provides space for equipment storage, produce processing, and cold storage and is the centre for farm operations.

Check it out!
