Triumf Centre for Outreach

Vancouver, BC

Feasibility complete 2018

TRIUMF is Canada’s national particle accelerator centre and its premier physics laboratory. It is operated by a consortium of universities and houses the world’s largest cyclotron.

MOTIV was commissioned to identify a build site and to develop a concept design for a new office and outreach building. The goal was to elevate TRIUMF’s presence on the UBC campus and to provide a venue for engaging with the public, other scientist peers, and cross-disciplinary partners. This includes ample room for 150 staff alongside extensive meeting, presentation, and assembly space. The design includes investment in a rich public realm surrounding the building - imbued with the story and achievements of TRIUMF over its history.

Additionally, a larger master plan was developed that reconfigured access to the campus. The design embraced the historic Newton tree cluster in an innovation hub of future buildings and plaza landscape that will provide a point of focus for the south campus of UBC.

The curving form of the building is inspired by the acceleration of particles that is at the core of TRIUMF’s research. Alternating cladding and windows create an ever-changing experience as one moves around the building.
